ThyssenKrupp’s Stair-Glide has advanced features, the most significant of which is the hand pendant control; fold up arms and the foot obstruction sensors. In addition to these features, the stair lift also has over speed brake and a joystick control on the arm, which makes the control easier even for people who are not able to use their hands properly. Stairs are composed of stringers, stair treads and stair risers. The stringers are the slanted members on the sides of the stairs which sit on the floor and are tightly attached at the top of the staircase. In most stair construction, there are two stringers installed on each set of steps. The stair treads are the sections in which you step on to travel up and down the stairs. Stair treads are usually made of wood.
While the maintenance of mobility in the event of a power outage is a huge advantage of a DC stair lift system, that advantage is tempered by the cost of replacing batteries every 12 to 18 months, which can run up to $100 a pop for most stair lift batteries. On the other hand, DC stair lifts make less of a demand on the home electricity system, meaning that electric bills will be somewhat lower for DC powered lifts. The batteries of a DC powered stair lift charge in one of two methods: station charging or the use of a charge strip. With station charging, permanent charging stations are positioned at each end of the rail. Charge strips allow the lift to charge at any point along the track. Today’s rechargeable batteries are reliable and hold a charge better than old models. The typical stair lift battery will stay charged through about 8 trips up and down the track, though it will vary based on how long the staircase is and how heavy the person it is transporting is.
The stair is now laid on its back and (starting from the bottom step) the treads are laid in position, fitting perfectly without gaps. As each tread is positioned it is attached to the rear riser. Once all treads are positioned, the stair is laid on its side again and the end screws through the brackets are inserted. The fasteners attaching the tread to the top of the rise may be inserted as blind screws (using pocket holes in the risers) or blocks from the underside or simply using finished nails from the top.
